"For the past several years, I've been using the experiential learning simulations Avi has made generously available. I've been teaching the core MBA operations 3 management course for full-time, evening, and weekend students for many years at Rady. Across these different student demographics, I've found that the Tradewind's Newsvendor Game has added a lot of value to their understanding of inventory management under uncertainty. What I typically do is frame a business problem such as a coffee shop making a decision each evening on how many pastries to order for delivery the next morning. I have the students compete against other to see who can manage this coffee shop the best over the next 20-30 days (as measured by total profits achieved). [...] The beauty of the simulator is that it provides students an opportunity to face and experience the newsvendor problem before we cover it in detail. There is no better motivation than experiencing the feeling of being unsure of what to do on what is seemingly an everyday problem. In my view, the simulation greatly increases students' desire to become better managers and it's really a no brainer to use. I've even used it to motivate newsvendor settings in PhD classes. Interestingly, I started teaching the core MBA quantitative analysis class and have figured out ways to employ the same simulation with various appropriate extensions to this class. [...] Avi's experiential learning tools are extensible to many settings, and I highly recommend you giving one of them a shot to better see how they can benefit your students."
